When the system is pla ying a DVD
VIDEO recor ded in multiple a udio
forma ts (PCM, Dolby Digital, or MPEG
audio), yo u can change the a udio format. I f
the DVD VIDEO is r ecorded with
multilingual tracks, yo u can also change
the language.
W ith a VIDEO CD or CD , you can select
the sound from the right o r left channel
and listen to the soun d of the selected
channel thro ugh both the right and left
speakers.
T o play a VIDEO CD with PBC
functions
When you s tart playing a VIDEO CD with
PBC (Playback contro l) functions, the menu
for yo ur selection appears.
T o pla y without using PBC

Selecting the S ound Effect
T o selec t an equalizer setting
Press EQ to di splay the current mode. W hile
the current mode is displa yed, press EQ
repeatedly un til the desired mode appears on
the front pa nel display .
“ A UT O”: A uto matically selects the movie
or music so und mode based on the disc
type.
“MO VIE”: Enjo yable, powerful bass and
sound effects; recommended fo r movies.
“MUS IC”: W e ll-balanced low and high
range; r ecommended for m usic.
“T V”: Clear , mid-range vocals;
recommended fo r watching dra mas or
comedies.
“ GAME”: Enhanced low and high ra nge;
recommended fo r action or shooting
games, etc.
T o selec t a surround setting
Press S URROUND to displa y the current
mode. While the current mode is disp layed,
press S URROUND repeat edly to select the
desired surround a udio out put mode. The
selected mode appears in the fron t panel
display .
“MUL TI ” (A.F .D. MUL TI): W hen the
source is 2 cha nnel, sound is out put from
all speakers.
“S T AND ARD” (A.F .D . ST AND ARD): The
system discriminates the sound f ormat of
the source and p resents sound as it wa s
recorded/encoded.
“DOLBY PL ” (PRO L OGIC): Performs
Dolby Pr o Logic deco ding.
“2CH ST” (2CH STEREO): All formats a re
downmixed to 2 cha nnels.
Note
Depending on the playback stream, the
surround settings ma y not be effective.
Using a T uner
T o preset radio stations
Y ou can pr eset 20 FM stations. Y ou can then
tune in an y of those stations sim ply by
selecting the corresponding p reset number .
1 Press FM.
2 Press and hold TUNING +/– for 2
seconds to start tuning until you find
the desired radio station.
“S EARCH +” or “S EARCH –” appears in
the front pa nel display un til a radio
station with sufficient signal str ength is
found.
3 Press and hold SHIFT , then press
PROGRAM.
“P 01” flashes in the fron t panel display .
4 Press and hold SHIFT , then press the
number buttons to select a preset
number .
5 Press to store the station

via the TV ’ s menu.
Sleep timer
Y ou can set the system to turn o ff at a preset
time, so you can fall asleep listenin g to music.
Press and hold SHIFT , then press SLEEP .
Each time you pr ess this butto n, the minute
display (the r emaining time) chang es by 10
minut es.
A count down of the last 20 seconds un til the
unit turns o ff appears in the fron t panel
display .
T o check the r emaining time
Press a nd hold SHIFT and S LEEP for 3
seconds. The remainin g time until the unit
turns off ap pears in the front pane l display .

disc.
Using the Setup Display
Y ou can make variou s adjustments t o items
such as pictur e and sound.
Display ed items vary depending on the

[16:9]: Select this when you connect a wide-

function.

This function is availab le when you connect
the system and a TV that is com patible with
the Control f or HDMI function via an HDMI
cable.
[On]: Y ou can operat e mutually between
compon ents that ar e connected via an HDMI
cable.
[Off ]: Off.
[HDMI Audio]
This setting is only r equired if you ar e using
the HDMI OUT jack fo r an audio
connection.
[Off ]: T urns off HDMI audio out put. Y ou can
still enjoy sound o utput via the speaker
system.
[All]: The HDMI audio o utput f ormat will be
same as the audio str eam being played. I f the
playback audio f ormat is not s upported, the
audio ou tput will be chang ed to PCM
aut omatically .
[PCM]: HDMI audio o utpu t will be
downmixed to linear PCM (2-ch annel).
[Screen Saver]
[On]: The screen saver imag e appears if yo u
do not opera te the system for abou t 15
minut es.
[Off ]: Off.
[Last Memory]
This system recalls the point wher e you
stopped the disc the last time it was p layed
and resumes p layback from that poin t the
next time you insert the same disc.
[On]: The system sto res the resume poin ts in
memory .
[Off ]: The system does not sto re the resume
points in memo r y . Pla yback restarts at the
resume poin t only for the curren t disc in the
unit.
Note
When the resum e playback memory is full,
the resume pla yback point for the earliest
disc is deleted.
[Aut o Standby]
[On]: Enters s tandby mode au tomatically
when in stop , pause, no disc, or eject mode
for mo re than 30 minu tes.
[Off ]: The unit does not en ter standby mode
aut omatically .

[Level]
Y ou can adj ust the sound level of all the
speakers and the sub woofer .
[L]: Ad justs the sound level of left speaker . I t
is possible to adj ust the parameter from -6.0
dB to +0.0 dB.
[C]: Ad justs the sound level of cen ter speaker .
I t is possible to adjust the pa rameter from
-6.0 dB to +6.0 dB.
[R]: Ad justs the sound level of right s peaker .
I t is possible to adjust the pa rameter from
-6.0 dB to +0.0 dB.
[SR]: A djusts the sound level o f right
surround speaker . I t is possible t o adjust the
parameter fro m -6.0 dB to +6.0 dB.
[SL]: A djusts the sound level o f left surround

[SW]: Adj usts the sound level of sub woofer . I t
is possible to adj ust the parameter from -6.0

[Distance]
If you m ove one o f the speakers, be sure to
set the parameters of the dis tance from the
listening position t o speakers.
[L/R]: Ad justs the distance of the left/right
speakers. I t is possible to ad just the parameter
from 1.0 m to 7.0 m (3 to 23 ft).
[C]: Ad justs the distance of the cen ter
speaker . This parameter ca n be set b etween
1.6 m (5 ft) shorter and equal to the L/R
channel setting.
[SL/SR]: A djusts the dista nce of the left/right
surround speaker . Thi s parameter can be set
between 5.0 m (16 ft) shorter and equal to
the L/R channel setting.
[C enter Speaker]
[On]: Activa tes the center speaker .
[Off ]: Deactivates the center speaker .
[Sur . Speaker]
[On]: Activa tes the surround speakers.
[Off ]: Deactivates the surround s peakers.
[T est T one]
The speakers will emit a test ton e to set the
Level.
[On]: The speakers emit the test to ne.

Picture
There is no picture.
The video connecting cords a re not
connected securely .
The unit is not co nnected to the correct
TV input jack.
The system is not selected via the video
inpu t of the TV .
Check the outp ut method on your syst em.
Even though y ou set the aspect ratio in
[T V Display] of [General Setup P age], the
picture does not fill the TV screen.
The aspect ratio on the disc is fixed.
Color irregularity occurs on the TV
screen.
The system ’ s speakers con tain magnet
parts, so magnetic distortion may occur .
When color irr egularity occurs on the TV
screen, check the follo wing items.
Install the speakers at least 0.3 m eters (1.0
ft) from your TV set.
If the color irr egularity persists, turn off
the TV s et once, then turn i t on after 15
to 30 minu tes.
Reposition the speakers farther awa y
from your TV set.
The [T V T ype] setting does not match
your TV .
[TV T ype] can be reset according to the
following p rocedure:
1. Press
to take out the disc.
2. Press DISPLA Y .
3. Press .
[TV T ype] will b e reset.

A disc cannot be ejected and “L OCKED”
appears in the front panel display .

Radio stations cannot be tuned in.
Check that the an tenna (aerial) is
connected securely . A djus t the antenna

A disc does not play .
The region code on the D VD does not
match the sys tem.
Mo isture has co ndensed inside the unit
and may ca use damage to the lenses.
Remove the disc and lea ve the unit turned
on for a bout half an hour .

The D A T A CD is no t recorded in ISO

Precautions
On placement
A t high volume, o ver long periods of time,
the cabinet becomes ho t to the touch. This
is not a malfunction. H owever , to uching
the cabinet sho uld be avoided. Do not place
the system in a confined space where
ventilatio n is poor as this may cause
overhea ting.
Do not install the system near hea t sources
such as radiat ors or air d ucts, or in a place
subject to direct sunlight, excessi ve dust,
mechanical vibra tion, or shock.
Do not install the system in an inclin ed
position. I t is designed to be operated in a
horizon tal position only .
Do not place heavy objects on the syst em.
On operation
If the system is b rought dir ectly from a cold
to a warm location, or i s placed in a very
damp r oom, moistur e may condense on the
lenses inside the unit. Sho uld this occ ur ,
the system may no t operate pr operly . I n
this case, remov e the disc and leave the
system turned on fo r about half an ho ur
until the moist ure evapora tes.
If an ything falls into the cabin et, unplug
the unit and ha ve it checked b y qualified
personnel before o perating it an y further .
On cleaning
Clean the cabinet, panel, a nd contr ols with
a soft cloth slightly mo istened with a mild
detergen t solution. Do not use an y type of
abrasiv e pad, scouring powder , or sol vent
such as alcohol o r benzine.

concerning yo ur system, please consult
your near est Sony dealer .
On cleaning discs, disc/lens cleaners
Do not use cleaning discs or disc/lens
cleaners (incl uding wet or spra y types).
These may cau se the apparat us to
malfunction.

On moving the system
Before movin g the system, make sure tha t
there is no disc inserted, and r emove the A C
power cor d (mains lead) from the wall outlet
(mains).
On handling discs
T o keep the disc clean, handle the disc by
its edge. Do not t ouch the surface.
Do not stick paper or ta pe on the disc.
Do not expose the disc to direct sunlight or
heat sources s uch as hot air ducts, o r leave
it in a car parked in dir ect sunlight as the
temperat ure may rise con siderably inside
the car .
On cleaning discs
Before pla ying, clean the disc with a
cleaning cloth.
W ipe the disc from the center ou t.
Do not use solven ts such as benzine,
thinner , commer cially available cleaners, o r
anti-sta tic spray in tended for vinyl LP s.
This system can only p lay back a standar d
circular disc. U sing neither stan dard nor
circular discs (e.g., card, hea rt, or star shape)
may ca use a malfunction.
Do not use a disc that has a comm ercially
available acces sor y attach ed, such as a label
or ring.
On heat radiation

No te that if service p ersonnel chan ges some
parts during repair , these parts ma y be

Po wer
The power is not turned on.
Check that the A C power cord (ma ins
lead) is connected securely .
Sound
The sound doesn’ t output from the
surround speakers.
Press S URROUND repeatedly a nd select
“MUL TI ” (A.F .D. MUL TI) t o outp ut
sound from all speakers.
(Depending on the media, sound may
not be out put from the surr ound
speakers.)
The [Speaker Setup Page] it ems cannot
be changed.
Press D VD/CD, then eject the disc.
There is no sound. Sev ere hum or noise is
heard.
Remove the speaker cor ds from the
SPEAKERS terminals, straigh ten and
extend the con tact area of each speaker
cord, then r econnect the speaker cords to
the SPEAKERS terminals.
Clean the disc.
The sound loses stereo effect when you
play a VIDEO CD or CD .
Set the audio setting to [Ster eo] by
pressin g A UDIO .
